Chumphon

A last minute decision on a long weekend actually delivered the goods.  And great goods they were.  Uncrowded white beaches, blue water, coconut palms, fantastic seafood and sensational countryside!

Chumphon Province is about 500km south of Bangkok on the west coast of the Gulf of Thailand.  David had been doing a bit of research on the Province with a proposal at work, and it sounded worth a look.

We stayed at a beach 9km north of Chumphon.  As you can see in the Photos, it’s beautiful and not crowded at all.  It’s really our type of beach.  Away from the hotels, shops, night clubs and westernised Thai food of Koh Samui and Phuket!

The seafood restaurant at the bungalows where we stayed was sensational.  Pig out on delicious prawns, squid and fuzzy catfish (don’t ask – just try it!), a couple of beers and pay about 300 Baht (AUS$12).

Had only one small hiccup with Danielle trying to say we ordered three dishes when we had received only two, only to end up receiving another two of the same dishes.  Fortunately, this is just the sort of challenge David willingly accepts.

If there was only one problem with our trip, it was sandflies.  Danielle, with her sweet blood, got 40 bites just on her back and they quickly came up into incredibly itchy raised welts.

The pick of the weekend was no doubt Monday morning.  The beach at 8am was deserted apart from a half dozen fishermen.  The cool air from a storm the previous evening made the sun on your body very welcoming.  A crystal sea and the foliage of the coconuts in the morning sun added to a perfect site.  Floating in the water, Bangkok seemed a million miles away.

Unfortunately, it was only 500km and we had to drive them that day.

The only thing of note was the number of accidents we passed.  In one stretch, just after we passed through a storm that reduced us to a crawl, we passed at least 12 vehicles in at least 6 different incidents within 2km – mostly cars off the road into ditches.  We also saw a frighteningly common sight in Thailand of a motorcyclist writhing on the ground until a police ute picks him up and takes him to hospital.

In summary, Chumphon is a great place and we hope to get back.  I think the offshore islands would tempt us next time!
