Watarrka (Kings Canyon) from the creek walk
|
People had told us that if you were heading this way,
a side trip to Kings Canyon was definitely worth it.
We were both wondering if it was going to be under-
whelming after all the grandeur of Uluru and Kata Tjuta.
The answer was not at all, as it was a most fascinating
and impressive place, and very different.

Another boring drive, covering the kilometres, and we were set up in the much more relaxing campground at the Kings Canyon Resort. Our little Corolla with all our gear jammed in the back and thrown over the seats was embarrassing compared to some of the elaborate set-ups of our neighbours. So much so that David shut the boot. However, this didn't stop us from accepting the very kind cups of tea from Murray and Marcell and enjoying their company.
The next morning we slept in and just lazed about until the chainsaws started up. However, it wasn't until after lunch that we headed to the canyon itself. Firstly we went up the Kings Creek Walk as an appetiser for then doing the Rim Walk.

Strolling around, reading the interesting info boards and with David trying to show off his geographical vocabulary (he was particularly proud of "cross-bedding") we started talking to Robyn, a paramedic temporarily based at Uluru.
We found ourselves enjoying her company as we wandered between the domes, unsuccessfully trying to get either ahead or behind a noisy bus-load of school children.
The scenery was constantly changing, lookouts of the gorge, scrambling over the domes, then down an elaborate staircase to the aptly named Garden of Eden.

Crossing around to the other side of the gorge, we saw the remarkable colours of the north side of the gorge. We then strolled among more domes and descended down to the carpark just as the afternoon colours deepened every texture and the wallabies just started becoming active.
