We were glad to arrive after the 5 hour drive from Alice Springs. Despite no speed limits on some sections, a Toyota Corolla has certain inherent speed limits of its own. Despite being packed in at the campsite at Yulara (The town set-up for visitors to the Rocks - and apparently the NT's fourth biggest!) we just couldn't be bothered to go anywhere else.

So dawn was our first chance to see the rock apart from a couple of glimpses between sand dunes. We joined the pre-dawn exodus and drove around to the eastern side as a familiar silhouette was just becoming apparent above the stars.

Coach loads of others soon joined us and we braved the freezing breeze and looked on enviously at tour groups with cups of tea. However, there was no doubting the spectacle as soon the rock was glowing orange. Then, within minutes, we were on our own again.

Wondering where everyone had gone, we discovered their next destination as we saw the chain of ants going up the side of the rock. We decided not to climb, respecting the wishes of the indigenous owners. David's view is that if you were invited to someone's house and they asked you not to go into a particular room, you wouldn't do it. However, our decision put us in a clear minority.

So we decided to walk the circumference, which for us had the added bonus of escaping the crowds. We enjoyed seeing some of the elaborate erosion land forms along the sides of the rock, the quite little water holes, the changing patterns of the light on the rock and the aboriginal markings.

Completing the loop, we had lunch, checked out the Cultural Centre then headed to Kata Tjuta.
