It is a surprising distance between to two big rocks (about 40km) so it takes a while to drive there, watching them slowly grow - while keeping an eye on the road, obviously!!

We were up for the 3-4 hour Valley of the Winds Walk, but were not sure as it was 3pm by this time, but we headed off to see what we could do.

We got to the first and then the second lookout, surrounded by lots of other tourists and their guides desperately trying to sound interesting. Getting close, you immediately notice how different the rock is: a conglomerate of rocks of all sizes, from beach balls to marbles.

Making good time, we decided to complete the loop, a decision we were immediately grateful for as we lost the crowds and had wonderful panoramic views over to the other range as the late afternoon light augmented the all the colours.

In the end, we made it back to the car in time to scoot around to the sunset viewing area. Jealously eyeing off the people who brought champagne, we, nevertheless, enjoyed the sensational sunset colours, neatly book-ending an extraordinary day.

Tomorrow, we would head off to Kings Canyon.
