This area of London has
traditionally being the home of the manufacture of clothing, such as Fashion
Street. The fashion industry still exists in the area but it has shifted slightly in area but a lot in terms of the architecture it inhabits. This four-storey building buzzed with the sounds of sewing machines and large reels of cotton sat on the window sills. The search for efficiencies has led to such businesses seeking out buildings such as this which allow the business to operate on a smaller footprint and allows improved supervision and coordination as compared to the small, house-based manufacture that historically had occurred in the area. |
|
| The area has also become home to other businesses such as this stationery supply business (right). The building most likely dates back no more than 20 years and is of a drab, practical and cheap design. |
