In the hub of the financial city, Bishopsgate is littered with modern bars, restaurants and eateries. There is a feel of a modern, lively and wealthy community that work in and around this area. This clearly serves as a very distinct form of identity in itself. Yet if one looks deeper it is clear that the identity of today has not completely buried the identity of the past. |

| Perhaps one of the most striking buildings in the area is that lying over the 'Fishmarket' restaurant on Bishopsgate, next to Liverpool Street station. Here we have the splendour of 19th century architecture being supported by an ultra-modern glass fronted restaurant. |

Similarly on the other side of the road there is a Tescos and yet directly overhead is the old fire station founded in 1854 and long since out of action. The architecture in this area invites questions to be asked about changing identities. What was the identity of the area in the past? How has it changed? How have new identities managed to cast former identities into shadow? |
