Construction on Tower 42 started in 1978 with completion in 1980. Embracing the philosophy of the skyscrapers more commonly found in the US, Tower 42 is a classic example of a power building. Originally constructed by NatWest as its headquarters it was the tallest building in the UK for some ten years.
Initially planned on a much smaller scale plans were eventually submitted for a 197m tower, when finally completed upon revision the height was reduced to 183m. The glass, steel and concrete structure differs from the classic more historical buildings in use within the city in that as it is a more recent more modern structure the space provided within it is more user friendly and flexible when taking into account today's requirements. |

| It is possible for companies to take over whole floors or simply sections of floors. A combination of office space and restaurants the building designed with the NatWest logo in mind was vacated by the company after the IRA bomb of 1993, however the footprint of the building will forever provide a legacy. Due to the flexibility afforded it is now home to a large number of small to medium sized companies. It is one of the most imposing and distinctive buildings around. In the foreground of the picture it is possible to observe further construction taking place. Here it differs somewhat in that instead of removing the more historic building entirely the façade of the building is being preserved. A purpose built modern day office block can be constructed with its associated greater benefits/flexibility, whilst still keeping the more classical outlook of the city of London. |
